Hair from car has decomposition like Caylee’s

NEW: FBI analyst says hair from car isn’t Casey Anthony’s but could be Caylee’sThe hair sample showed signs of decomposition, the FBI tech testifiesAnthony is accused of killing Caylee in 2008; her lawyers said she drownedTrial resumes Monday; prosecutors have about two weeks of work aheadTune in to HLN’s "Nancy Grace" at 8 ET for live reports from Florida with all the details of the Casey Anthony trial. And follow the action on Nancy’s special Casey Anthony trial page.(CNN) A single hair that shows evidence of decomposition was similar to that of Casey Anthony’s 2 year old daughter, Caylee, an FBI evidence analyst testified at the Orlando, Florida, woman’s trial
wholesale hair Saturday.Investigators found the hair in the trunk of Casey Anthony’s car. Prosecutors are trying to link the hair to Caylee as evidence that her body was in the car.But defense attorney Jose Baez attacked FBI trace evidence examiner Karen Lowe’s findings as little more than unreliable opinion in a morning of fitful testimony that produced frequent objections and huddles among the attorneys out of earshot of the jury.A crime scene investigator, the operator of a towing company and members of Anthony’s family all have testified they smelled a bad odor coming from Anthony’s car after it was found abandoned in a parking lot on June 27, 2008, then towed four days later.Caylee was last reported seen by her family on June 16, 2008, but no one alerted police until July 15, 2008 after the girl’s grandmother tracked Anthony down and demanded answers. Caylee’s skeletal remains were found in December 2008.Anthony, 25, is charged with seven counts in Caylee’s death, including first degree murder, aggravated child abuse and misleading police.

If convicted, she could face the death penalty.Prosecutors say she used chloroform on her daughter and then put duct tape on her nose and mouth to suffocate her. She has pleaded not guilty and has denied having anything to do with the girl’s disappearance or death. The Orlando woman’s attorneys argue Caylee drowned in the family pool on June 16, 2008. They say Anthony and her father panicked and covered up the death. George Anthony denied the claim during his testimony last week.Testimony about the hair marks a departure from the dramatic testimony and evidence of the last nine days, in which friends and acquaintances contradicted Anthony’s claims that she was frantically searching for her daughter during the month she was missing.Instead, according to evidence and testimony in the case, she was spending time with her boyfriend, shopping and going to nightclubs. In dry, scientific terms, FBI trace evidence analyst Karen Lowe testified Saturday how a 9 inch piece of hair sent to the FBI lab in Quantico, Virginia, appeared similar to a piece of hair recovered from a brush belonging to the girl. But she said hair analysis is not as precise as DNA analysis, so she could not say with absolute certainty that the hair belonged to the girl. The hair had a dark band that Lowe testified has only been seen in hairs remaining in the scalp of a decomposing body.A crime scene investigator, Gerardo Bloise, testified Friday that he recovered a human hair from the trunk of Anthony’s car, and also that the car smelled of decomposition.

In cross examination, Baez questioned the validity of Lowe’s testimony, first asking if there was any way to prove how the hair got into the trunk."I couldn’t say how the hair got there," Lowe said. "It’s consistent with transfer or contact of some sort, but I don’t know from whom."She also testified under questioning from Baez that while the hair is clearly not Casey Anthony’s, it could belong to any other light haired relative on her mother’s side of the family.Lowe also testified there are no standards for identifying the bands and that such decisions are based on her opinion and that of a fellow investigator.Baez also questioned Lowe’s experience, saying she had failed a 2000 proficiency test and that she has never before testified on hair banding. He also questioned the entire premise of hair analysis, citing a 2009 National Academies of Science report that broadly questioned the use of microscopic hair analysis and other forensic science results in criminal cases.Lowe said she agreed with the report’s findings that hair can’t uniquely identify an individual and that it’s important to send samples for DNA analysis, which she said she did in the Anthony case. Lowe, who is not a DNA expert, has not testified about the findings of the those tests. The hair in question was recovered after Anthony’s car was picked up from her family’s home, after it had been abandoned in a parking lot, towed to an impound lot and then driven back to the family home two weeks later by Anthony’s father.According to testimony, Anthony asked her boyfriend to pick her up from the parking lot on June 27, saying the car had run out of gas.

She also told a friend that she believed an animal carcass was lodged in her car’s frame. The car was towed to an impound lot on June 30, 2008, where a manager said he also smelled the odor of decomposition. An analysis of the car after the Orange County Sheriff’s Office took possession of it did not show any such evidence, Bloise testified. Also on Saturday, Orange County crime scene investigator Mike Vincent told jurors about collecting air samples from inside Anthony’s car. A scientist later found evidence of chloroform and gases associated with decomposition in those samples.

Back Cove leaves trail users shaken

The woman drove herself to the hospital after the assault and contacted police.

Chief Michael Sauschuck said Thursday that police are looking for two individuals who witnessed the attack and shouted in the direction of the victim and suspect, halting the assault.

hope is that members of the community come forward, the chief said. is an incredibly traumatic crime. rapes are rare in Portland, but the number reported so far this year 18, including Wednesday is on pace to eclipse the total of 21 cases in 2014.

In the past decade, rapes in Portland have ranged from a high of 42 in 2008 to a low of 21 last year. The yearly average from 2005 through 2014 was 31.5.

But Sauschuck said the overwhelming majority of those cases do not involve strangers. That, and the high traffic location, is what makes Wednesday alleged attack stand out.

The suspect has been described as white, in his late 20s or early 30s, with dark hair and a goatee. He is 6 feet 1 inch to 6 feet 3 inches tall, with an average build, and he wore shiny red shorts and a black or navy blue tank top.

Sauschuck hopes the suspect appearance in particular his height and distinctive shorts might prompt people to come forward. He said anyone who was on the trail around that time Wednesday should contact police if they have information.

The chief would not comment in detail about the victim.

On Thursday morning, some trail users said they had heard about the assault and were surprised that something like that could happen, especially in daytime.

couldn believe it. There are so many people, said Karen Leo, who lives in Jersey City, New Jersey, but often uses the trail when she visits family in Maine. don expect something like this here. were unaware of what had happened, but also were shocked.

Taylor Flood, a University of Southern Maine student who lives nearby and uses the trail regularly, said she has always felt safe there.

roommates tell me I should have pepper spray or a whistle, she said. I should. But there are so many people here on any given day. Marcroft, who lives nearby and walks the trail almost daily, said the incident her out. She returned to the trail Thursday with her husband, Jim.

such a great place, Jim Marcroft said. may just have to take more precautions. COVE ASSAULTS RARE

Many walkers and runners could be seen Thursday along various sections of the 3.5 mile trail that curls around Back Cove and offers users both water and city skyline views.

Portland officers and a police dog spent Wednesday afternoon and evening collecting evidence from the scene. Detectives returned Thursday morning to continue looking for clues. At one point, a detective retrieved what appeared to be men underwear near the area, but it not known whether it was related to the assault.

Sauschuck said that in his 18 years with the Portland department, he aware of only two other reports of sexual assaults on Back Cove Trail. One turned out to be a false report.

Assistant Chief Vernon Malloch said he could not determine how many rapes in Portland involved strangers and how many involved people who knew each other because the department crime data analyst was not in the office, but he said sexual assaults by a stranger are extremely rare.

Sauschuck understands that people are unsettled by the report of an attack.

in the city overall is down 14 percent, but that doesn matter to the victim (Wednesday). It doesn matter to me, he said.

Portland police said Wednesday that they plan to add bicycle patrols on the trail and increase patrols on the roads around it.

They are reminding the public to carry cellphones and report any suspicious activity, and also to walk in groups if possible. If confronted by a suspicious person, be as vocal as possible to draw attention.

Police also said they have regular Rape Aggression Defense classes. The next session begins in September. Anyone seeking information can contact the department at 874 8643.

Police are asking anyone who may have seen the incident, or know of a person matching the suspect description, to call them at 874 8575.

Anonymous tips can be left on the department crime tip line, 874 8584. Cellphone users can text the keyword plus their message to 274637 (CRIMES).

I am WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG and I admit it. The story seemed so plausible to me. I can admit I was wrong. Wrong wrong wrong wrong. Did I mention I was wrong? If not, I was wrong. I guess I don understand how anyone would falsely report a rape. Being a rape victim myself from years ago, I can imagine ever wanting to falsely report that and bring that kind of attention to myself. There nothing glorious about it. So I tend to side with rape victims, but I spoke too soon. WAY too soon and I
facebook besthairbuy spoke from emotions rather than facts.

It really appears from all the new crime in Portland that the local police just don know what they are dealing with. They are overwhelmed and Portland is low hanging fruit to these criminals. Albeit, it shouldn be left to individual citizens to be on high alert in a City that for years was peaceful. The police need to get matters in hand but, unfortunately, they look like they just got off the circus bus every time something like this happens. Just terrible to see a beautiful City turned into another US war zone.

you start off with don have statistics which means you making it up so, I had a couple of minutes to do YOUR work for you. An extensive study carried out by the FBI (1997) found that 8% of rape accusations were provably false

But as for how she feels within, that hasn’t changed one bit despite the backlash.

"The timing was completely unexpected. As to the second question, I did feel that at some point I would need to address the complexity of my identity."

hairstylist has regained her stride

hairstylist has regained her stride

Anna Fionda, a hairstylist who occupied the first chair at Edwin Paul Salon in Grosse Pointe Woods for 27 years, drove herself to the hospital emergency room on Valentine’s Day 2010. She was queasy, dehydrated and feverish.

The next thing she remembers is waking up in a hospital bed on March 13. She had developed a bacterial infection, which led to septic shock, and her body had shunted blood away from her appendages to save her vital organs and brain. Her limbs were black up to her elbows and knees.

"The heart works hard to save the organs and forgets about the hands and feet," is how Fionda described it. But hands and feet are how she had made a career and a reputation.

"When I tell you they were
wholesale Malaysia hair black, they were the color of this table," Fionda says, gesturing toward the dark, lacquered coffee table in her Clinton Township home.

"They wanted to amputate and I said no. They would talk to me and I’d say ‘Get the hell out of my room.’ I wouldn’t even look at them when they talked to me."

On April 20, 2010, Fionda’s 48th birthday, doctors told her they needed to amputate half of her right foot and her left foot to the heel.

On July 15, they amputated most of her fingers.

She kept both thumbs. But on her right hand the one she uses to hold her cutting shears, she lost most of four fingers, leaving them each about an inch long. On her left hand, the one that holds the hair as she cuts, she lost her index finger down to the second knuckle and just more than the tips of the remaining three.

In the throes of recovery, Fionda wondered if she’d be able to work and wield the tools of her trade again.

"I felt like my life had been taken," she recalls. She was despondent and depressed, and mourned especially the damage to her hands. "They are so much about what I am."

The doctors told her that with therapy and determination, she could walk and work again. It would be a huge struggle, but Fionda was used to hardship when it came to her health.

Ever since she was a child, the youngest of five born to Italian parents who settled in Scotland, Fionda says she knew she wanted to be a hairdresser. She was fascinated by a family friend who was a beautician and who would practice on Fionda and her two sisters. She carried that aspiration with her after the family moved to metro Detroit when she was 12.

She wanted to enroll in beauty school after graduating from Roseville High School, but the 17 year old was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. A year of treatment left the disease in remission. But then she contracted Guillain Barr syndrome, an illness believed to be caused by a virus that prompts the immune system to attack the nerves, resulting in muscle weakness and paralysis.

Fionda says she lived in a wheelchair for two years while she recovered, and then had to contend with more treatment when the cancer came back. She finally enrolled in beauty school at age 21.

Then in 2000, she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, likely a result of the radiation she endured as part of her earlier cancer treatment. In January 2009, she underwent a heart catheterization and the implant of a pacemaker.

"I don’t die easy," she quips.

Fionda thought something was wrong with her heart that Valentine’s Day when she drove herself to Beaumont Hospital in Grosse Pointe. Or, she thought, she might be coming down with some virulent bug. She was vomiting and developed diarrhea, and her hands and feet tingled. On the way, she realized she probably shouldn’t be driving herself.

Within 48 hours, doctors told her siblings that she might not live through the night. She had developed septic shock, blood poisoning caused by a bacterial infection that spread through the body, probably as a result of
wholesale brazilian hair weave an untreated case of pneumonia.

After spending most of four months hospitalized, Fionda went home in a wheelchair.

"The doctors were a lot more encouraging than I was," says Fionda. "I was certain I’d never be able to work again."

Her siblings took turns staying the night with her at home. Before the amputation, her gangrenous limbs had given her a great deal of pain. Without them, her physical pain was less, but her emotional wounds were constant.

Fionda says she hobbled around
hair vendors wholesale the house, using a walker and holding onto furniture and walls. She had pairs of household rubber gloves in every room to protect her healing hands from further injury or infection as she washed her face and tried preparing meals. She had lost 40 pounds, and was down to 82 pounds with little appetite.

She had to balance herself to navigate stairs. "We walk on the balls of our feet, and I don’t have balls on my feet anymore," she says.

Once her fingers healed, she’d sit on her couch and try manipulating a curling iron with her stubby digits. Or she’d try manipulating scissors "for hours on end open and close, open and close." She practiced cutting hair on her siblings.

"It was hard for something that for 30 years has been second nature to me," Fionda says. "They came out OK, but it was so much work. My head was moving faster than my hands. If I think about it too much, it will make me crazy."

One night, she hobbled out to her car after vowing to drive around the block.

"The hardest part was putting the car in gear, because I didn’t have the length on my fingers," she says. "But I adapted."

Her friends and coworkers organized a fund raising gala to help Fionda with expenses. Finally, it was something to look forward to, and Fionda vowed she’d make a memorable entrance.
